Air Filters
Air filters are the devices, which are designed to filter and remove a
range of contaminants from the air, including molds, pollens, bacteria,
gases, dirt and odors. There are particular filters available for various
needs as different filters are designed to remove different types of
particles. Filters are made from various materials, like fabrics such as
gauze, fibers such as polyester and metals such as stainless steel.
The air filters are mainly used in the applications where air quality is
important. They are mainly needed in building ventilation systems, engines,
such as internal combustion engines, gas compressors, diving air
compressors, gas turbines etc.
Efficiency of Air Filters
Filter efficiency is determined by a few different factors:
- Size of the filter fibers
- Density of the fibers in the filter
- Velocity of the air that moves through the filter.
Applications of Air Filters
- Automobile Industry: Air filters are extensively used in
automobile industry. They are used in different types of vehicles to
help promote engine hygiene. The most common types of filters used in
automobiles are combustion air filter and the cabin air filter. The main
function of combustion air filter is to prevent separate particle of
matter from entering the engine's combustion chambers. It ensures the
proper functioning of engines and enhances their life.
- Domestic and Industrial Appliances: Air filters are largely
used in the domestic and industrial sector to improve the air quality.
The sizes and types of air filters depends on the requirement. Also
clean and pure air ensures longer life to the individual machines. e.g.
air conditioners, vacuum cleaners and humidifiers
Need of Air Filters
On the average, each person breathes in about 18,185 liters of air per day.
These 18,185 liters of air contain about 1,120,000,000 particles of dust.
The size of the dust particles are 3 microns or smaller and they easily get
through our noses and mouths. According to a survey by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air is two to five times more
polluted than outdoor air. All of us need healthy environment and clean air,
inside our homes, inside our offices, inside the schools, and everywhere for
a healthy and prosperous life. So in order to reduce indoor air pollution
and provide a healthier environment we need a quality air filter. Efficient
air filters can be the primary defense against poor indoor air quality.

Buying Tips For Air Filters
Air filters are essential for purifying the indoor air and thus improving
the air quality that we breathe inside. Before investing in a good air
filter, we should look for certain features:
- Warranty: The warranty period should be long enough. Quality
air filters provide longer warranty period.
- Cost of Filters: Prior to buying, decide your budget. It will
help you choose a perfect one suiting your budget.
- Size: You should buy the air filter according to your
requirements. Air filters for an individual room is smaller in size and
capacity than the one required in a large hall.
- Efficiency % of Particles: Some filter technologies are
efficient in removing smaller particles, while some are good at bigger
size particles. It depends upon the requirement of the user to decide,
which filtration technology suit their needs.
- Noise Level: Some air filters are very noisy and they might
create problems at those places where peace is a requirement.
- Power Source: You should check that the whether the power
source is A.C. or D.C.. The choice is totally upon the user's
requirement.
