Ozone air purifiers are used to remove viruses, bacteria, mold, and other
biological pollutants from the indoor air. They are also called ozone
generators or ozone air filters. They have been used for decades in
hospitals, the food industry, and in various medical applications.
The ozone air purifiers are very good at removing odors, such as cigarette
smoke and cooking odors. They become more handy when a home or any large
area is flooded or has a sewage backup. This technology is often suggested
by professionals and is helpful to clean up the mess. Since people and pets
are removed while the ozone is applied so there is no danger of any health
hazards.
Working of Ozone Air Purifiers
The ozone air cleaners go through a
chemical process instead of electronic or mechanical processes to clean the
air. Introduction of ozone into the air stream can be beneficial if used
under controlled conditions and where humans are not exposed. High
concentrations of ozone are effective in controlling the growth of microbes,
as in meat storage, and in controlling odors, as in fire and flood damaged
buildings.
Functioning & Working of Ozone Air Filters
The normal oxygen
is made up of two oxygen atoms. The ozone molecules are made of three oxygen
atoms. The third oxygen atom in the ozone is capable to react with another
molecules thus changing their chemical composition, and killing viruses and
bacteria in the process. The ozone required for the killing of
micro-organisms are created artificially by the ozone generators.
Ozone is not found in the air around us. It is present only at the upper
atmospheric level. There are different ways by which ozone generators
generate ozone. Usually it is done with some type of ultra violet (UV) lamp.
However one method that needs to be avoided is the so called corona
discharge systems. It convert nitrogen to airborne nitric oxide and nitric
acid, both of which are harmful for the health.
Ozone Generators: Health Hazard
Instead of having all such good benefits, according to numerous ozone
studies it has been proved that ozone can be harmful if used in higher
concentrations. It can have adverse effects on humans health specially on
the respiratory system. Many of the companies and industries, like Food and
Drug Administration has therefore set a limit of 0.05 ppm.
